Beset a.k.a. Bastet was a feline goddess who was depicted either as a cat or woman with the head of a cat. She was the daughter of the sun god Ra and was closely associated with domesticated cat. Bastet was worshiped for her maternal, protective nature and was often painted surrounded by kittens. But she was also believed to be ferocious when necessary for cats were able to kill snakes - one the most deadly creatures in ancient Egypt.

"For a moment, think of every major event that has occurred in your life since 1986 (if you're old enough, of course). Many birthdays have come and gone, children have grown to become adults, and we went from listening to "Rock Me Amadeus" to well... Justin Bieber. In a nutshell, things have changed quite a bit, but not for everything. In 1986, this Aston Martin DBS was rolled into a barn and locked safely away from prying eyes, and for the last 30 years, that is exactly where it has remained, until now. The dusty yet gorgeous Aston will cross the Silverstone Auctions block in May, where it's expected to fetch upwards of £60,000 (about $87,000). New in 1968, it would have cost about £4,470. Few words can describe the emotional weight of these barn find images, but "haunting" seems to fit. The Aston's three decades of shed isolation have written their story across its fastback bodywork, which now comes layered thick with dust, dirt, and a spot of bird dirt or two. Peer beneath the grime though and the DBS still wears its original coat of Mink Bronze paint. Inside the grand tourer's cabin, time has stood equally still, however the elements have been a bit less fair. The rich leather front seats and upholstery have grown grey and mottled with age. And while no one has sat in the back seat of this DBS for ages, it would appear critters haven't long given up roost there. Even so, it's utterly jaw-dropping to see in its untouched state. According to the auction house, the Aston Martin was sold new on November 5th, 1968, to its first owner in Surrey, England, who held onto it for a little under two years. In April 1970, the DBS passed to its second owner—a 'Mr. Pasqua'—who relocated the car to the island of Jersey (the largest of the UK's Channel Islands). For the next 16 years it would accumulate a scant number of miles before getting tucked away in a barn on the island, and to this day, the odometer reads just 30,565 miles driven. Then again, how far can you really drive on an island that's only five miles wide and eight miles long. As for its model history, the DBS was the rather radical successor to the storied and much more sweeping Aston Martin DB6. It arrived new in 1967, intended to receive a new V8 engine, but it wasn't ready in time for production so the first series housed the firm's lauded twin-cam straight six. On May 20th the Aston Martin DBS will find a new owner, but the question is this: do you restore it to like-new condition, or keep it as is... and untouched?"

Gwened, Bro Gwened (Standard Breton: Bro-Wened), or Vannetais (French: Pays Vannetais) is a historic realm and county of Brittany in France. It is considered part of Lower Brittany. Bro Gwened was an early medieval principality or kingdom around Vannes in Armorica (Brittany), lasting from around AD 490 to around 635. It was peopled by Christianized Britons fleeing the Saxon invasions of Britain, who displaced or assimilated the remaining pagan Veneti Gauls. Its bishop and (usually) court was at Gwened, the site of the former Roman settlement of Darioritum and the present French city of Vannes. Today, its territories are included within the modern French department of Morbihan.

Ostgoten, Langobarden und Franken besetzten Italien, doch etwa ab 540 blieben die Orte in der Lagune der westlichste Außenposten des Byzantinischen Reichs.[48] Sie entwickelten eine eigene Herrschaftsstruktur mit Tribunen und, der Legende nach ab 697[49], einem Dogen an der Spitze. 811 wurde die Residenz des Dogen nach Rialto verlegt. Diese Verlagerung fiel in eine Zeit, als sich Byzanz und das Frankenreich unter Karl dem Großen um die rechtmÀßige Nachfolge der rΓΆmischen Kaiser stritten. Dieser Gegensatz fΓΌhrte zu Parteibildungen und MachtkΓ€mpfen innerhalb der Stadt, denen auch einige Dogen zum Opfer fielen. Zugleich strebten die mΓ€chtigsten Familien die Alleinherrschaft mit Hilfe des Dogenamts an, wogegen sich die ΓΌbrigen Familien verbΓΌndeten. So verhinderten sie eine Dynastiebildung und der Kern der komplizierten Verfassung Venedigs nahm Gestalt an. Alle mΓ€nnlichen Erwachsenen der adligen Familien hatten Sitz und Stimme im Großen Rat. Zugleich waren Überwachungsgremien mit fast unbeschrΓ€nkter Vollmacht, wie der Rat der Zehn oder der Senat von erheblicher Bedeutung. Die mΓ€chtigsten Familien beherrschten die Politik und den gewinntrΓ€chtigen Fernhandel. Geschicktes Lavieren zwischen den GroßmΓ€chten verschaffte Venedig gΓΌnstige HandelsvertrΓ€ge, die ihm fast eine Monopolstellung im Handel zwischen Westeuropa und Byzanz eintrugen. Zugleich baute es schon frΓΌh seine Beziehungen zu den muslimischen Herrschern aus. 828 wurden die Gebeine des Evangelisten Markus aus Alexandria gestohlen. Zu seinen Ehren und als wΓΌrdiger Ort fΓΌr seine Reliquien entstand der Markusdom. Die beiden SΓ€ulen auf der Piazzetta tragen die Figur des heiligen Theodor und den geflΓΌgelten LΓΆwen, das Symbol fΓΌr den Evangelisten Markus, der Theodor als Schutzpatron verdrΓ€ngte. Der MarkuslΓΆwe wurde zum Wappen und Hoheitszeichen Venedigs, allgegenwΓ€rtig sowohl in der Stadt wie in allen von Venedig beherrschten Gebieten. Wichtige Waren und LuxusgΓΌter aus Asien und Afrika wie Seide, Pelze, Elfenbein, GewΓΌrze, FΓ€rbemittel und ParfΓΌme wurden ΓΌber die levantinischen und nordafrikanischen HΓ€fen umgeschlagen. Über Venedig wurde im Gegenzug der Handel mit Waren aus West- und Nordeuropa abgewickelt – wie Gold, Silber, Bernstein, Wolle, Holz, Zinn und Eisen, aber auch geschliffene Juwelen, Glaswaren, Arzneimittel und Sklaven. Zur Sicherung des Seehandels baute Venedig seit 1104 eine Schiffswerft, das Arsenal, das mehrmals erweitert wurde. Die hier gebauten Flotten begleiteten die regelmÀßigen Kauffahrerkonvois und waren zugleich ein Mittel, die Piraterie einzudΓ€mmen und das Kolonialreich, zunΓ€chst in der Adria, auszudehnen. Schon im Verlauf des 8. Jahrhunderts machte sich Venedig zunehmend von Byzanz unabhΓ€ngig, wenn auch 806 bis 810 die byzantinische Flotte mehrfach in Venedig lag, um die Stadt gegen die Franken zu verteidigen. 815 erkannten sich die beiden Kaiserreiche formal an. Auch leistete Venedig 828 einer Aufforderung Konstantinopels Folge, gegen die Araber vor Sizilien UnterstΓΌtzung zu leisten, erneut etwa zwei Jahre spΓ€ter. Kaiser Lothar I. stattete Venedig 840 mit zahlreichen Rechten aus, was einer BestΓ€tigung seiner UnabhΓ€ngigkeit gleichkam.[50] Weitere souverΓ€ne VertrΓ€ge mit den KΓΆnigen von Italien folgten, wie 888 mit Berengar I., 891 mit Wido von Spoleto, 924 mit Rudolf von Burgund und 927 mit Hugo I. von der Provence.[51] Anfang des 10. Jahrhunderts erscheint Venedig letztmals als Teil des Byzantinischen Reichs in einer byzantinischen Quelle.[52] Zwischen 842 und 846 drangen jedoch Slawen bis Caorle vor, 875 Sarazenen bis Grado; Angriffe der Ungarn, die 900 bis in die Lagune eindrangen, zwangen Venedig, die Inseln von Rialto mit Mauern zu umgeben, eine Kette schΓΌtzte die Einfahrt zum Canal Grande.
Wenden (auch Winden, lateinisch Venedi) ist eine veraltete Bezeichnung fΓΌr Slawen im deutschsprachigen Raum (Germania Slavica), besonders fΓΌr die Sorben in der Lausitz. Eine Γ€hnliche Bezeichnung tragen die „Windischen“ (Slowenen) im Alpenraum.
